Tips to Avoid Road Rage
In the province of British Columbia road rage accounts for $1000's of dollars in property damage and persons being charged for various criminal and civil offences. It is also the cause of a significant number of motor vehicle accidents and presents a real and present threat to your safety when driving on our highways. You will be faced with a road rage situation at some time. Here are a few common sense tips and approaches to use when faced with it:
1.Breathe deeply and slowly-it sounds silly but is necessary to bring your self out of an enraged state. The urge to react is strong at that moment.Remember, you are in control of several thousand pounds of metal racing down a highway at a high rate of speed. Your car will react to your anger. Keep your hands on the wheel and keep telling yourself the situation is only temporary.

2.Yell it out-That doesn’t mean yelling at the other driver either. Roll up your window and either keep going straight or pull off to the side of the road. Do not make eye contact with the instigator. That is very important. Doing that willgo along way to ensuring no one gets hurt and it will feel good to release that energy.

3.Look for aggressive drivers- These are cars that constantly change lanes, speed up then down and have no regard for other drivers. Stay away from them at all cost and stay focussed on your driving .

4.Leave yourself ample time-When you are in a rush you make hasty and sometimes wrong decisions. If your route is crowded attempt to find an alternate one.

5.Bring distractions with you- Put in some soothing relaxing music to listen to,something to chew on or a stress ball to squeeze to help work out your frustration .

6.Pull over- If you are so upset and find yourself “ losing it” pull over. Are your kids in your car? If so ask yourself, am I setting a good example for them?.

Lastly remember road rage is temporary. It will pass. Keep your emotions in check and keep telling yourself it is not worth dying over.
